Wings Over Europe Cold War Gone Hot Game Review: Wings Over Europe Cold War Gone Hot is a combat/flight simulator game which was set during the Cold War era where the USSR has attacked NATO forces in West Germany & thus turned it into a "Hot War". The United States release of the game is called Wings Over Europe Cold War Gone Hot, though the tag line is changed to Wings Over Europe: Soviet Invasion for the European market. The time period covered is 1962-1984. The game includes a wide variety of real jets & weapons from the era which can be employed in several mission types such as Combat Air Patrol, Interception,Iron Hand, Close Air Support, Reconnaissance & Wild Weasel. Wings Over Europe Cold War Gone Hot is based on the Strike Fighters: Project 1 engine. Third Wire Productions developed Wings Over Europe Cold War Gone Hot. An updated version for the Windows Vista platform named Strike Fighters 2 Europe was released in 2009. The original game, is still compatible with Vista & Windows 7.
Wings Over Europe Cold War Gone Hot GamePlay: Aircraft that come into service after 1970 have advanced Head Up Display that allows the player to aim bombs with more accuracy than manual dive bombing techniques. The Laser Guided bombs such as the GBU-12 Paveway and A & B versions of the AGM-65 Maverickare are included, allowing much easier ground target destruction for the late 1970s aircraft. Missiles from 1978 onward such as the AIM-9L version of the Sidewinder are upgraded and much improved & more likely to score a hit. Dogfights are close in affairs regardless of the time period, though the Missiles get better over time, longer range kills can be achieved. The map of Germany has scaled down slightly so that there will be less time spent flying to a target. The lack of water on the map is meant that aircraft carrier operations haven't been included this time. During a mission you will fly in a flight of aircraft and the computer-controlled planes keep in formation as you fly to a target. Flying over Soviet held East Germany the player's aircraft will meet with a high level of radar guided Surface to Air Missiles, & a variety of lethal Anti-Aircraft Artillery. The main Surface to Air Missiles are the soviet SA-2 & SA-6, of which early & later versions are included in the game increasing lethal accordingly.
