The game features a fantastical version of the carribean during the age of Piracy. The player has assumed the role of Guybrush Threepwood. He is a youngman who dreams of becoming a Pirate and want to explore fictional islands while solving puzzles.The Secret of Monkey Island was conceived in the year 1998 by the employee of Lucasfilm Robert Gilbert. He designed the game with Dave Grossman and Tim Schafer. The game play focuses the game on exploration. The game's atmosphere is based on the Pirates of the Caribbean theme Park Ride. The game was the 5th game built with the SCUMM Engine. Critics praised the game for its audiovisuals, humour, and ofcourse for its Gameplay.

The game can be played via a point-and-click interface.The player guides the player will have to guide a protagonist Guybrush Threepwood through the The Secret of Monkey Island's world. The player needs to interact Guybrush Threepwood with the environment. In order to do this he will have to select one of the twelve verb commands included in the game such as "Talk To" allows Guybrush Threepwood to communicate with other characters and Pick Up for collecting items through the commands and the The Secret of Monkey Island world's objects. These things will help the player to solve the puzzles successfully and allows Guybrush Threepwood to progress in the game. When he communicates with other characters, the player is able to choose topics for discussion which will be listed in a dialogue tree. The Secret of Monkey Island is one of the 1st to incorporate such a system. Action in the game is frequently interrupted by the cutscenes and non interactive animated sequences which are used to provide the player an information about character personality and advance the plot.
